Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It only takes a minute to sign up. After bringing this up to Synology support, they recommended I always use the IPs for reliability, but I really don't see why UNC paths shouldn't be just as reliable.

Even stranger, when the UNC path is not working in Windows Explorer, I can ping the server name and nslookup the server name with instant responses from my DNS servers. It does sound like you should be focusing on DNS. Can you set a static entry for your Synology server in DNS and then verify that it can be properly resolved nslookup before trying to access the share?

Perhaps that will help. Just guessing here. I was having the same problem and it took me a couple of hours to figure out, so thought I'd share it. Sign up to join this community. I use a UK domain name registrar called reg. You can buy the domain for however long you think you need it 1 year, 2 years, etc. I have had one of my domains for over 10 years.! Now that we have a domain, we can start to configure a few more things.

Firstly, make sure any emails sent to this domain are forwarded to your own email address. We will need a service provider that the Synology can talk to automatically, so that when your external IP address changes whenever you reboot your routerthe domain name forwarding will continue to work. As you can see from the image below, there are a lot of service providers that Synology can automatically update. Pick one from the list that you feel comfortable with, and sign up for a free account — if they have one.

The provider I use is NoIP. They have a free service, however, you need to renew the account every 30 days by just clicking a link. Also, make sure you use a very strong password. You need to create a new DNS entry for your domain name. It will redirect to your DDNS service provider hostname.

Every home router is different, and some corporate ones require more than just a couple of steps.

This is a link to an old router I used to have, a Netgear DG You can try to find your own router from their extensive list if you like. For more advanced routers you may need a few more steps. They are valid for one year, and can be easily renewed. Did I also mention they are free.

No hidden charges, completely free. You will then need to validate the domain name that you want to create a certificate for. We are almost done. We have a domain, with DDNS forwarding, and port forwarding on a custom port. We just need to add the certificate to the DiskStation and optionally change the port numbers….

You should now be able to connect to your Synology DiskStation via your newly bought domain name. You set a unique name for each computer in your Network. April 21Few of the blog readers asked me on few occasions if they can change the AD domain name to the different domain name. Answer is yes you can, but you need to aware of the issues it can occur as well. Otherwise you will be end up in a mess with non-functioning infrastructure. Idea of this post is to demonstrate how to rename AD and also to point out some issues you may face with a domain rename.

Location of the Domain — in forest it can have different level of domains. Those can be either complete different domains or child domains. If you going to change the location of the dc in the forest you must need to create trust relationships between domains to keep the connectivity. Folder Path Change — if DFS folder services or roaming profiles are setup, those paths must change in to server-based share or network share. Computer Name Change — Once the domain is renamed the computers host names will also renamed.

So if those are configured to use by applications or systems make sure you prepare to do those changes. Reboots — Systems will need to reboot twice to apply the name changes including workstations. So be prepare for the downtime and service interruptions. All other versions are not supported for this. Also there can be other applications in environment which can be not supported with rename. Make sure you access these risks.

Once your infrastructure is ready, to perform the rename process we need an administrative computer or server. It must be a member of domain and should not a DC. For windows server it can be add as feature via server manager.

In demo, I am going to rename contoso. It is runs with windows server R2. I have prepare a server which runs windows server R2 as member server to perform the rename.

Before we start the rename make sure forest domain activities are stopped. Such as adding new DC, changing forest configuration etc. First we need to create a report which explains the current forest setup. This will create an xml file with name Domainlist. To proceed it need to be edited to match with the new domain name. Make sure you save the file after edits. It will reboot all domain controllers automatically. All workstations and servers will needs to reboot twice to apply changes.

Username and password will not change, but the domain name will be new one. It can do using command netdom computername DC.Few of the blog readers asked me on few occasions if they can change the AD domain name to the different domain name. Will not do any music, file share Both sites have public static IP. We would like also to backup the local users at the remote site, they are not part of the domain.

I would need a folder for them to do an Xcopy from their pc to their folder and be able to access it if ever needed to restore data. Is this possible to co exist on the device once it has joined our domain.

Main thing is the users at remote site cannot get to the data of our main office. Can this be done through user accounts and not join the domain? I know this is many questions and I am going back to work in the interface after I post this which may answer some of this. Just thought it would be a big help from others that have used these. Use a VPN. It will secure the traffic and help keep others who shouldn't be in your network out.

I think the VPN is the connection I need to use, but not sure which route from there. My original plan was to just do xcopy or robocopy from the server to the NAS at the remote site. From what I see in the interface is to backup the NAS to somewhere, not to pull a backup to it. I did see where others for used BackupExec to copy to the drive and we have BE so that may be an option. This will be DSL speeds between the 2 sites, after work hours but still not real fast.

The way veeam endpoint works is you set it up on the system you want to backup and point it at a network share and let it do its thing, It then does backups as often as you want it to, Veeam does have other solutions for backing up virtual machines on hyper-v servers as well as vmware and I suppose that you could use the endpoint product to backup a windows server but I have a feeling they probably have a different option all-together for that application.

Thanks for your help. The synology will be our off-site backup, we will not be backing up the synology to any of the sites you mentioned. I thought that I could launch the backup from the synology, thinking it had it's own backup software and it would backup my server.

From what I can tell that is not going to be an option with this unit. I will work with a VPN site to site and try the Backup Exec on our server to use the synology as a backup device. If that does not work as planned I will go to my original plan of Robo Copy or Xcopy I see in the Synology I can give my domain users access or restrict them. I really do not want any of them to have access to this, it will be accessed from the server only with administrator login.

If I restrict the other users will that be only on the synology I do not want it to change the file permissions of the data that is backed up to the folder.? I shared a folder and gave the administrator access to it. When I browse to it with lan IP I see the folder, it ask for user and password, I give it administrator and it keeps looping back to the login as if it is incorrect.

I tried to use Backup Exec, and it allowed me to select the NAS as an external hard drive, when I setup a job and ran it, it failed with "drive is offline". I had added a couple of public ip to the Allow list of IP but did not put any in the block.

I did a remote to the domain server and was able to connect from their as it is behind one of the Public IP that I had in the Allow group. I am thinking it is only letting the users behind the public IP get in. Which is not the way it was worded, it read like it would just always allow those IP not that it would block all others. So one I got in I remove all of them from the allow thinking that would disable the blocking. As the Synology Media Server bases its indexing, cover images and descriptions on the filename of your movies and TV shows, its critical to get the format correct.

Movies are by far the easiest filename to format because they are generally a single file. The following are acceptable file naming conventions, I have emboldened my recommended format:. As TV shows have multiple seasons and some episodes are double bills, these can be a little more complicated. Personally I recommend a main folder per TV Show, a sub-folder for each season and individual episodes named via the emboldened format below the login being that this structure can be browsed via a network or a search and still make sense :.

I would download one of the myriad movie merge applications available online and merge them, tidies things up a bit too. The DVD episode numbering and order is different from the series episodes broadcast as found on the internet. I have not yet had success in retrieving metadata. I would recommend changing the recommendation a little: 1.

This allows sorting alphabetically into chronological order. Maybe a period or an underscore. Hi Mitchell, Thanks for this, all good suggestions. Over the years I tried various ones and the parser would do a poor job of correctly identifying the episode but my recommendation worked.
